One construction worker killed, another hurt in Penang pillar collapse

NIBONG TEBAL: A Bangladeshi contract worker was killed and his Indonesian colleague injured when they were crushed by collapsing concrete piling pillars during constructions works at a factory in Simpang Ampat here, this morning.

The deceased was identified as Md Shriful Islam, 33, while Mustofa Salam, 50, sustained minor injuries.

The Sungai Bakap Fire and Rescue Department was alerted to the incident at about 10.30am.

Operations officer Mohamad Najib Hashim said when they arrived at the scene, they were told that two men were pinned under the concrete piling pillars.

"The first victim, the Indonesian, was pulled to safety before our arrival. He sustained minor injuries and was taken to the Sungai Bakap Hospital for treatment.

"As for the second victim, the Bangladeshi, we managed to pull him out at about 11.02am. He was confirmed dead by paramedics at the scene due to serious injuries," he said, adding that the deceased was then handed over to the police for further action.

The operation was called off at about 11.32am.

The deceased's remains were sent to the Sungai Bakap Hospital for a post-mortem.
