MELAKA: A 49-year-old woman jumped to her death into the Melaka River last night, in spite of attempts by members of the public and the authorities to thwart her attempt.
In the 10pm incident at Kota Laksamana, the woman, who was disabled, shocked members of the public when she suddenly alighted from her car and threw herself into the river.
A witness to the incident screamed for help, while another contacted the marine police and members of the People's Volunteer Corps (Rela) to help the woman.
Although rescuers eventually reached her, the woman was already unconscious when brought to the river's bank.
She was later confirmed dead by a medical officer at the Melaka Hospital.
Initial investigations revealed that the victim had intended to commit suicide, and that there was no foul play.
The woman, who carried an OKU card for physical disability, hailed from Tampin, Negri Sembilan.
Melaka Tengah police chief Assistant Commissioner Afzanizar Ahmad said the Melaka Hospital is conducting a post-mortem on the woman’s body.
"We are now looking for the woman's next of kin," he added.
