MIRI: The start of the new week saw torrential rain lashing the northern Sarawak region, bringing flash floods to many parts of Miri and Lambir during early morning hours on Monday (Dec 2).
Populated residential estates along Jalan Lambir, Jalan Miri-Bintulu, Taman Tunku and Kampung Lusut housing zones were inundated by about half-a-metre of water following non-stop rain.
Miri Fire and Rescue Department chief Supt Law Poh Kiong said many sections of highways and roads inside housing estates were also flooded.
"The rain was intense from 8pm (Sunday) until 2am (Monday) at least.
"Low-lying areas were the worst affected by the floods," he said.
Even the Bomba Miri station located inside Miri city was flooded, he said.
There was no evacuation so far as yet.
Northern Sarawak is feeling the effects of the landas season now.
The landas is the equivalent of the monsoon in the east coast states of Peninsular Malaysia.
