PENANG: The Penang International Airport (PIA) expansion project will include flood mitigation measures to address flooding problems at the airport.
Penang Chief Minister Chow Keow, via his posting on Facebook, stated that delegates from Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) paid a courtesy call to update him on the expansion project.
MAHB senior manager Mohd Nadzim Hashim said the airport would be designed to accommodate up to 12 million passengers a year.
"Flood mitigation measures will also be part of the expansion project,” Mohd Nazim added.
He further stated that the number of passengers at the airport is growing rapidly.
"We recorded 7.2 million passengers last year and we expect the figure to increase to 7.8 million this year," he told the Chief Minister during the courtesy visit on Monday.
Mohd Nadzim said MAHB hoped to kick off the expansion project by 2020.
