MCO: Zoo Negara needs urgent donations

2020-03-30

KUALA LUMPUR: The Movement Control Order (MCO), which took effect on March 18, has also affected Zoo Negara as lack of donation and ticket sale forced it to utilise its emergency fund to cover operating costs.

Zoo Negara deputy president Rosly@ Rahmat Ahmat Lana said, however, all animals in the zoo are healthy and in good shape.

“It is a big challenge for us to cover the zoo’s operating costs during this temporary closure as Zoo Negara relies on ticket sales, space rentals, corporate sponsorships and public donations for income,” he said yesterday.

Rosly said so far, no organisation had come forward to contribute to the Zoo Negara’s fund which forced it to use its emergency fund to continue to operate during the MCO period.

The emergency fund is a provision specifically created by the management of the Malaysian Zoological Society (MSZ) for such unforeseen circumstances.

According to Rosly, the fund was only sufficient to sustain the zoo’s operation for three months.

“However, we have enough food supply for now as appointed contractors still deliver supplies.

“For those who wanted to donate, they can do so by participating in our Adopt An Animal campaign,” he said.

Rosly said such campaign is implemented by most of the zoos around the world to raise revenue that will be used to maintain the wellbeing of the animals.
