KUALA LUMPUR: Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) is expected to nominate its president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as the 8th prime minister tonight.
A source met outside the Al-Bukhary Foundation building here said the announcement might be made at a press conference.
However, the time and venue of the press conference has yet to be decided, it said.
According to the source, the decision to nominate Muhyiddin as prime minister was based on the support shown by "Geng 11" (Azmin team), Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) and Umno-Pas Muafakat Nasional.
With the support of the four blocs, the coalition is confident of garnering a simple majority consisting of 116 seats to form a new government, pending a decree from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Mustafa Billah Shah, the source added.
"Currently, there is a dispute in Bersatu between the interim Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Muhyiddin's 'camp'.
"Hence, the next step would be the announcement tonight, god willing," added the source.
Earlier today, Dr Mahathir and 25 of members of parliament from Bersatu convened at the Al-Bukhary Foundation for a meeting.
