KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 11 ― Muslim preacher Zamihan Mat Zin was arrested by the police today, following an investigation into alleged sedition in a religious lecture he delivered on Sunday.

News portal Malaysiakini reported Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd confirming the arrest, which was made at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters earlier at 3.50pm.

“He is being investigated under the Sedition Act and read together with the Communications and Multimedia Act,” he reportedly said.

Zamihan will be remanded at the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex tomorrow, according to Wan Ahmad Najmuddin.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun had confirmed the investigation against the former Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) officer this morning.

Zamihan was recorded criticising “a Sultan” for the latter’s actions over a Muslim-only laundry.

He was also caught on video making racist remarks about the Chinese, calling them “unhygienic” for not washing up after urinating and defecating, and for consuming alcohol and pork.

He denied today that he was referring to the Sultan of Johor as reported, claiming that he never mentioned any Malay Ruler by name, despite using the terms “Afghanistan” and “Taliban” in his remarks.

Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar previously said during an interview that Johor was not a “Taliban” state and that the laundry owner should “migrate to Afghanistan” if the latter was unhappy with a directive to end the discriminatory policy.

Zamihan, who is the president of Sunni Organisation Malaysia (Aswaja), today also urged the police to investigate a media outlet for sedition over its report on his remarks made during a religious lecture at the Masjid Tengku Ampuan Jemaah in Shah Alam on Sunday.
